Tips to Furnish Your Home Office Inexpensively

Follow these tips for creating a home office simply and inexpensively.

Look Around ~  
 What do you already have in your home that could easily be put into your home office to make it comfortable and inviting?  Years ago my mother gave me a love seat. Now it wasn’t my taste (it was covered in pink velvet) but it had beautiful lines and was quite the conversation piece.  So I took it to a local upholsterer and had it recovered in a pretty floral pattern that reflected my own style.

Do you have an attic or basement? Perhaps you can find some home office furniture that you can accent your home office with like a nice corner table or lamp. Maybe all they need is a coat of paint or some dusting and cleaning. 

Recycle ~ How about old boxes or plastic cartons? They can be used as catch-alls for things you want to be easily found. And they too can be great accessories for your home office. They can be used to file important items that you don’t yet want to store.  Small boxes and plastic containers are great on top of the desk for all the little office necessities you need at hand.

Tap into Your Friends ~ Have a friend who is moving, going out of business or changing careers? He or she may have a computer, copier or phone they would be willing to give you or sell you pretty cheap. I found a pretty round table in my friend’s garage that just needed a little dusting and a pretty table cloth.  It had a broken leg so I got some glue and screws, fixed the leg, covered it in a pretty table cloth and put it in a corner with a photo, a vase of flowers and some pictures of my family.  Perfect!

If your friend wants to sell their computer, offer to barter or exchange with them.  You can exchange services you have for something they need. You might offer to run errands, do some housework, etc.

I have found Saturdays the best time to go “garage sale shopping.” I have found a complete phone system, a fax machine, a small book shelf and more for my home office.

Look at Sales ~ Office Depot, Office Max and other office supply stores have great sales right now. My husband purchased a really nice fax, copier scanner (all in one) for almost half price. The office supply store had a sale and were also offering a discount on top of that for old copiers.  Not a bad idea!

Compare prices ~ One week one store may have pens, envelopes and other things you need on sale. The next week they may have computer discs, copy paper and other office furniture supplies.

I also went to JC Penny and bought a beautiful area rug and a couple of throw pillows that matched my decor perfectly

The home office has become common place in homes across the country and has given many people the opportunity to work from home. This growth has seen a mass surge in the availability of home office furniture and equipment and turned what were once bedrooms into office bedrooms.

This new requirement has meant that many home owners have had to rearrange existing bedrooms to fit some types of office furniture. From an interior design point of view this is not ideal. It is much easier to start with a clean slate and in this article we will discuss some of the things you need to consider when creating your new home office.

The first thing you will need to consider is room arrangement and furniture. The room needs to serve several functions. It will mainly be used as an office however it must have space for guests to stay. This is because people often don’t have the space for both a guest bedroom and office. With this in mind you will need to look at essential furniture. Furniture designers are all too aware of these limitations within homes and often design clever furniture items which can do several things at once. For example some offer desks with built in filing systems and cable management.

Once you have selected your furniture items you need to look at where they will fit in the room. In most instances you will probably want to fit the office furniture around your bed. A better solution would be to purchase a sofa bed. Sofas take up a lot less room than a full sized bed and you can simply set it up when required. A sofa bed should also give you a bit more floor space.

Now that you have your furniture in place you will want to start looking at paint colors. Paint is usually easier to apply than wallpaper and gives you a certain level of flexibility. Home offices can be one of the most difficult rooms to paint as you will need a wall color that is energizing and at the same time not distracting.

Neutral colors are typically the most popular however these can look a little bland without the use of decorative features and texture. Other colors like brown can be used to create a warm feeling while not being too distracting. Remember to make use of testers and think about decorations. Strong picture frame colors and vases can work really well.

The mood set by your chosen color is also important. Making use of rich wood tones on the floor can give a feeling of warmth. Make sure that this matches your rooms theme and is practical for any guests that stay. You don’t want any guests slipping up.

The size of your room is also important. Darker colors can make your room feel very small and over powering. Larger rooms can feel a little empty with certain colors. This is why furnishings are so important.

As with all decoration projects you should enjoy the experience and take your time over decisions. Don’t rush into anything and make use of expert advice.
