Furniture sofas, also called couches or settees, are one of the most basic furniture of a typical home. They designed for seating two or more people. The seats are raised just enough for a person's feet to touch the ground, as couches are generally designed for comfort. Other types include the fainting couch, which is backless, the chaise lounge, which has only one armrest, and the canape, which is a decorative three-seater couch.

Aside from being nice to look at, furniture sofas need to be functional first and foremost. They can classified according to how they are used. Some of the most common types include the recliner sofa, which is geared with a reclining mechanism for a more comfortable seating. There's also the sleeper sofa - also known as "sofa bed" - which can be converted into a sleeping bed. Sectional sofas consist of several parts or sections which can be put together in various ways, depending on the space. These types of furniture sofas are generally termed as convertible sofas.

Furniture sofas today come with many different built-in attachments and accessories such as adjustable footrests, recliners, storage units, and even cup and magazine holders. More modern couches are also built in with sound systems, heaters and even relaxing vibrators or massagers.
